The RSN is thrilled to take part in the newly launched ‘Artisan Festival’ which will take place in the Hampton Court Palace East Front Gardens from 18-20 June – a great family day out to look forward to this summer!
The RSN will teach a pretty Workshop, ‘Hearts & Flowers – An Introduction to Surface Stitched Embroidery’, every day of the Artisan Festival at Hampton Court Palace this June. Surface Stitches, or ‘freestyle embroidery’, is such a versatile technique, and lends itself to a huge variety of styles, subject matter and objects.
During the Workshop, you will learn the hand embroidery techniques needed to complete this lovely, stylised Heart. To work the cheerful posy of delicate flowers, you will learn a variety of traditional Surface Stitches: Stem Stitch, Detached Chain, French Knots and Seeding Stitch. On completion, you will be able to turn your work in to a special card, lavender sachet, or small framed work of art.
To attend the RSN Workshop, you must first purchase your entry ticket to the Artisan Festival, which you can book through the Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) website. Your ticket will also include entry to the palace via a one-way route and it is free for HRP members. The RSN Workshops are booked through the RSN website (see below), and there are only 12 places per day so you need to book your place fast!
This 90 minute RSN Workshop will take place from 11am-12.30pm every day of the Artisan Festival, in one of our Degree teaching studios within the Palace, which looks down on to the gardens. The cost is £25 per person, including the kit. You will meet at the RSN marquee (E3) at 10.45am on the day of your Workshop and one of the RSN team will bring you to the Workshop space.
To book your Workshop place, please choose your required date:
PLEASE NOTE — Access to the Artisan Festival itself is NOT included in your RSN Workshop ticket. In order to attend the workshop you will ALSO need to hold an entry ticket to the festival itself. Tickets to the festival can be purchased directly from Hampton Court Palace here.
Join a Talk!
The RSN Chief Executive & Curator, Dr Susan Kay-Williams, will also be giving an Exclusive Talk in the ‘Ask the Expert Tent’ entitled ‘Four Weddings, Four Coronations & Two Funerals: The Royal School of Needlework’s Royal Commissions’, included in your entry ticket.
Every day, 2-3pm, Susan will highlight how the RSN goes about working on large and prestigious commissions, including their special approach that has been used since the 19th century. She will talk about what we know of the earlier commissions from press reports as well as from RSN papers and documents. Altogether, you will travel from the 1880s to the 21st century!
… and more!
You will be able to pick up plenty of inspiration and expert advice from the ‘artists in residence’, including the RSN. In our marquee, we will be demonstrating the art of hand embroidery, have stunning work from our students on display and sell exclusive RSN Shop items.
There will also be other shopping opportunities with exquisite hand-crafted gifts from a wide range of luxury independent makers including homewares, fashion, beauty products and more.
Alongside all of this, you will be able to enjoy the tastiest food and drink from street food vendors and pop-up bars and relax in the beautiful gardens as vintage gramophones play the sounds of the 1930s, as well as take part in traditional garden fête games and Shire horse carriage rides!
See you there!
