Drawing and Design for Embroidery is aimed at Certificate & Diploma students, but is open to all stitchers who wish to develop their design skills. Aims: To give you confidence in the drawing and design process to help you work on unique designs for your embroidery projects. This is a practical course, with lots of doodling, drawing, and experimenting with media. You'll learn some theory of composition, and how colour works. On the final day you will bring it all together as you work on your own embroidery design. We will be giving you very practical ways of drawing and boosting your confidence in your own skills. Day 1: Drawing basics. Inspiration Look at materials, then try some drawing warm-up exercises. We will be looking at the tonal scale, and drawing basic shapes. We will also consider where you might get ideas, and how to record them. Day 2: Composition and colour Warm up drawing exercises. You will learn some guidelines for composition, including diferent formats, the Golden Mean, viewpoints and symmetry. The second part of the day will focus on colour theory and some exercises for you to start learning how they apply in practice. we’ll also consider colour symbolism, and how to choose colour in threads, along with manufacturers’ numbering systems and how they help. Day 3: Design. Final warm up drawing exercises. You will then use everything you’ve been introduced to to generate your own design from original source material. We will guide you through the process, from following a brief, choosing source material, drawing your design, choosing a colour scheme, tonal reference drawing, and stitch plan. KIT: A comprehensive pack of class notes will be provided, plus an A4 sketchbook and Drawing Pen. Other materials will be required: B and 2B graphite pencils, Putty rubber, 12 watercolour pencils. They can be bought cheaply from Cass Art or Jacksons Online, and will cost about £16. If you already have some art materials, bring them! The more variety the better.
