The discovery of the Bacton Altar Cloth at St Faith's Church, Bacton, Herefordshire, has excited historians and the textile community alike. It has been painstakingly conserved and will now form the focal point of a new exhibition at Hampton Court Palace ‘The Lost Dress of Elizabeth I', opening on 12th October. The Royal School of Needlework has partnered with the Palace to offer this unique and exclusive event to view the exhibition and stitch this beautiful motif inspired by the cloth (spaces are limited).
The day will start with a private view of the Exhibition before the Palace opens where you will receive a short talk from Eleri Lynn, Curator of Historical Dress for Historical Royal Palaces and the person who researched and authenticated this amazing treasure. Eleri has researched the cloth and discovered a link to the portrait of Elizabeth I showing her wearing a dress that has become known as the Rainbow Portrait, attributed to Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. The portrait along with other relevant artefacts will be displayed for you to see the connection to the Bacton Frontal. This is a rare and unique collection of items brought together for the first time.
After spending time exploring the exhibition you will move to the Royal School of Needlework where under expert tutelage you will have the opportunity to work this charming little daffodil sprig design, combining it with a cheeky caterpillar, both motifs taken from the piece.
This class will give you a chance to stitch the design in exactly the same way as the 16th century piece including, Stem Stitch, Seeding, French Knots, Pistol Stitch, Satin Stitch along with a highlight of couched gilt passing.
The price of the package covers the day class, kit, short lecture and exclusive entry into the exhibition.
The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day. The event will run from 9.30am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace. Click here to view Joining Instructions
