Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10.30am-4.30pm at The D-Day Story, Portsmouth.

RSN Tutor, Sarah de Rousset-Hall, will be teaching a Whitework embroidery class at The D-Day Story Museum on Friday 1 July as part of a series of classes to celebrate the Overlord Embroidery which was made by the RSN from 1968 to 1974. The class is suitable for all levels with beginners welcome.

Sarah's beautiful design was inspired by Overlord Embroidery panels (see product gallery) and the Museum's stunning location on the front at Southsea.  Students will be working with white threads on white Edinburgh Linen, using various Whitework techniques, including Pulled Work to create different textures to create the design in a single colour. However, working in white on white can be a challenge for the eyes, so pastel coloured threads will be available on the day as an alternative.

Sarah will teach you all the stitches you will require to complete the design during the class, and full written instructions are included in the kit if you do not complete the design on the day.

The class will cover the following stitches: Double Running Stitch, Finnish Filling, Honeycomb Filling, Pulled Eyelets, Couching, Padded Satin Stitch and French Knots.

Your kit includes: Edinburgh Linen with printed design, perle and stranded cotton threads, full written instructions and all the needles required to stitch the design. The finished design measures approximately 5cm by 5cm and is photographed in a 6” hoop.

All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.

Your class kit (included in the cost of the course)  will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day. You will also be treated to a D-Day Story Curator tour of the Overlord as part of your day.

The workshop runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm at The D-Day Story, Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Hampshire PO5 3NT (please arrive by 10.15am). You may want to bring a packed lunch and drinks although the Café should also be open on the day. However, hot drinks and biscuits will be supplied! Please see important joining instructions for Portsmouth HERE

Class participants will also receive a free ticket for one visit to the museum, valid for 12 months from the date of the class they attend.

The class will adhere to current Covid-19 guidelines and the venue has undertaken a comprehensive risk assessment. The museum has achieved the Visit Britain 'Good to go' standard.
