the work of the RSN
A range of embroidery classes for all levels and techniques
« Day Classes
Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10.30am-4.30pm at The D-Day Story, Portsmouth.
RSN Tutor, Helen Jones, will be teaching a bespoke Stumpwork embroidery class at The D-Day Story Museum on Friday 25 March 2022 as part of a series of classes to celebrate the Overlord Embroidery which was made by the RSN from 1968 to 1974. The class is suitable for all levels with beginners welcome.
Helen will teach students how to create this stunning design using fabric, simple stitches, wire and silk wrapped purls to create a sweet briar rose; and more threads and beads to stitch some nettles.
Helen’s class has been inspired by the beautiful D-Day memorial window in Portsmouth Cathedral (1956). The window commemorates Admiral Bertram Ramsey, who was born at Hampton Court Palace and went on to be Naval Commander of the D-Day landings, as well as those who died under his command. The design of the window includes an image of a flower and a nettle which is a reference to a quotation from Shakespeare’s Henry IV “… Out of this nettle, danger, we pluck this flower, safety.”
Helen says: “This idea struck me as a lovely basis for some Stumpwork, also known as Raised Work, and I chose the rose as the flower which you will work for this class.”
All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.
Your class kit (included in the cost of the course) will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day. You will also be treated to a D-Day Story Curator tour of the Overlord as part of your day.
The workshop runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm at The D-Day Story, Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Hampshire PO5 3NT (please arrive by 10.15am). You may want to bring a packed lunch and drinks although the Café should also be open on the day. However, hot drinks and biscuits will be supplied! Please see important joining instructions for Portsmouth HERE
