Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10am-4pm at Ely Cathedral Centre across the road from the Cathedral.

RSN Tutor, Heather Lewis, will be teaching a bespoke Goldwork Fleur de Lis  class at Ely Cathedral Centre on Saturday 5 March 2022 to celebrate our For Worship & Glory II Exhibition of ecclesiastical works from the RSN Collection, alongside contemporary fashion pieces from our Degree programme. The class is suitable for all levels.

Heather will teach you how to create this stunning Fleur de Lis design and introduce you to a range of techniques used in Goldwork embroidery. You will work with a selection of gold threads such as Japanese thread, Pearl Purl and Bright Check.

During this one day course you will learn the basics of Goldwork, such as applying felt padding, couching down gold threads and stitching down Bright check 'chips'. The class kit includes silk dupion fabric, gold threads, polyester sewing thread, beeswax, needles plus instructions for you to complete the embroidery at home. Please note, your design will worked on a plain purple silk dupion.

Your class kit (included in the cost of the course)  will include everything you require to complete the project. You will be able to borrow ring frames and embroidery scissors on the day. If you are accustomed to stitching with magnifiers and/or additional lighting, please bring your equipment to the class.  Please see joining instructions HERE

You will also be treated to a complimentary pass to visit the RSN's fabulous For Worship & Glory II Exhibition at lunchtime. The exhibition runs from 26 January to 13 March 2022. Highlights include the opportunity to see all 12 panels of the Litany of Loreto. This will be the first time they have been exhibited together since 2013, enabling close scrutiny of these amazing works alongside some of the original designs created by Italian graphic designer Ezio Anichini.

The class runs from 10am to 4pm at Ely Cathedral Centre, Palace Green, Ely CB7 4EW (please arrive by 9.50am).  You may want to bring a packed lunch and drinks, although there are cafés nearby. The class will adhere to current Covid-19 guidelines.
