Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10am-4pm at Ely Cathedral Centre across the road from the Cathedral.

Join RSN Tutor, Helen Jones, to stitch this beautiful Whitework Waterlily at Ely Cathedral Centre on Saturday 12 March 2022 to celebrate our For Worship & Glory II Exhibition of ecclesiastical works from the RSN Collection, alongside contemporary fashion pieces from our Degree programme. The class is suitable for all levels.

In this one day course, students will learn a range of Whitework textural stitches, including the Mountmellick stitch, to create their own Waterlily motif. By the end of the class you will have learnt everything to be able to finish the kit at home.

Mountmellick is a Whitework embroidery technique dating back to 19th century Ireland.  It has an interesting history having developed as a means of helping women earn an income through stitch. It uses a heavy, off-white, satin weave cotton fabric which has a slight sheen and, for contrast, matt, pure white cotton threads of different weights. The joy of Mountmellick is in the rich textural stitches used to create images from nature, typically flowers, fruits and grasses.

Your class kit (included in the cost of the course)  will include everything you require to complete the project. You will be able to borrow ring frames and embroidery scissors on the day. This is a white on white technique, so if you are accustomed to stitch with magnifiers and/or additional lighting, please bring your equipment to the class. Alternatively, if you would like to stitch the piece on dark fabric instead this can be arranged, but please let us know at the time of booking.

You will also be treated to a complimentary pass to visit the RSN's fabulous For Worship & Glory II Exhibition at lunchtime. The exhibition runs from 26 January to 13 March 2022. Highlights include the opportunity to see all 12 panels of the Litany of Loreto. This will be the first time they have been exhibited together since 2013, enabling close scrutiny of these amazing works alongside some of the original designs created by Italian graphic designer Ezio Anichini.

The class runs from 10am to 4pm at Ely Cathedral Centre, Palace Green, Ely CB7 4EW (please arrive by 9.50am).  You may want to bring a packed lunch and drinks, although there are cafés nearby.  Please see joining instructions HERE The class will adhere to current Covid-19 guidelines.
