RSN Tutor, Deborah Wilding will be teaching a bespoke embroidery class at Fashion Museum Bath on Saturday 20 July 2019. The class is suitable for all levels and is based on a multi-coloured wool embroidered petticoat.
In this class you will be stitching one of the motifs on this richly decorated Crewelwork petticoat circa 1690. During the day you will create the distinctive ship motif which is also on the petticoat as well as one of the sailors. (Last year we stitched one of the ladies which decorate the petticoat). Techniques include chain stitch, stem stitch and satin stitch and all the stitching will be done with Appleton Crewel Wool on a linen fabric background.
The Crewelwork petticoat features in the exhibition A History of Fashion in 100 Objects at the Fashion Museum Bath. The class will begin with a viewing of the petticoat in the Museum galleries with a curator.
The class kit must be bought from the tutor on the day for £30 (cash only) and will include everything you require to complete the project.
You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
The workshop runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm at Fashion Museum, Assembly Rooms, Bennett Street, Bath BA1 2QH. All attendees must be comfortable climbing stairs. The class takes place in the Fashion Museum Study Facilities, which is on the first floor of the Assembly Rooms. The class includes a ticket to the Museum, valid for a month from the date of the class.
