This class is EXCLUSIVE to the RSN and is offered as part of our 150th Anniversary Celebrations.  Bookings Close at 12pm on Wed 1 July 2022.

RSN Tutor, Sarah de Rousset-Hall will be teaching this exclusive Coronation Gold class at the Fashion & Textile Museum in London to celebrate our 150th anniversary this year.  The class is inspired by the RSN's commissions produced for the British royal family and by objects on display at our exhibition at the Museum,  '150 Years of the Royal School of Needlework: Crown to Catwalk’ from 1 April - 4 September 2022.

The stunning Shamrock & Acorn design for this class is inspired by the embroidery on the 1937 Coronation Robe of State worn by of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, consort of King George VI and stitched by the Royal School of Needlework. The original Robe will be on display at the exhibition and you will have a chance to view this wonderful object during the day.

The RSN’s link to Coronation Robes goes back to the 1902 Coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra, after which the School was commissioned to do work on all of the 20th Century Coronations.

The design will be worked onto a sumptuous ivory silk satin using gilt and metallic threads, echoing both the Coronation dress and Robe. During the class you will learn many of the embroidery techniques used on these garments including Trellis, Chipping, Couching and Applique. You will also add felt padding to the acorn to give it extra dimension and sparkle. The finished design measures approximately 5cm by 5cm and is photographed in a 4” hoop.

Your RSN kit includes: double-faced silk satin with printed design, gold kid leather, assorted metal and metallic threads, sewing thread, a beeswax crown, a mini velvet board, wool felt for padding and all the needles required to stitch the design.

The class is suitable for all levels, although some embroidery experience would be helpful. The class cost includes all materials and your kit comprises everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers if you need them but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.

This event includes entrance to the exhibition, '150 years of the Royal School of Needlework: Crown to Catwalk'. You will be able to visit the exhibition at lunchtime and after the class until 6pm.

Joining Instructions:

Registration commences at 10.30am and please ring the intercom upon arrival. Food and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed at the Museum or in the classroom, but there are numerous cafes nearby for lunch.
