This three-day class held over two weekends is aimed at C&D students, but is also open to all stitchers of mixed ability. This course will increase your confidence in the drawing and design process helping you work on unique designs for your embroidery projects. This is a practical course, with lots of doodling, drawing, and experimenting with media, including some theory of composition and how colour works. We will be giving you very practical ways of drawing and boosting your confidence in your own skills. On the final day you will bring it all together to use your new found confidence, as you work on your own embroidery design. Day 1: Drawing basics. Inspiration - Saturday 21 September 2019 The first day will start by looking at materials followed by trying some drawing warm-up exercises. Once you have settled into the day, areas considered, will be tonal scale and drawing basic shapes. We will also consider and discuss where you might get ideas and when you find them, how to record them in a way that you can return to and use. Day 2: Composition and colour - Sunday 22 September 2019 Day 2 will start with more warm up drawing exercises. Before learning some guidelines for composition, including different formats such as the Golden Mean, viewpoints and symmetry. The second part of the day will focus on colour theory and some exercises for you to start learning how they apply in practice. We will also consider colour symbolism, and how to choose colour in threads, along with manufacturers’ numbering systems and how they help. Day 3: Design Sunday - 6 October 2019 The last day will start with the final warm up drawing exercises. You will then use everything you have been introduced to, so you can generate your own design from original source material. We will guide you through the process, from following a brief, choosing source material, drawing your design, choosing a colour scheme, tonal reference drawing, and stitch plan. Materials KIT: A comprehensive pack of class notes will be provided, A4 sketchbook and Drawing Pen. Other materials will be required: B and 2B graphite pencils, Putty rubber, 12 watercolour pencils. They can be bought cheaply from Cass Art or Jacksons Online, and will cost about £16. If you already have some art materials, bring them! The more variety the better. The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day. This class will run from 10am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU. Please click here to view important joining information about Hampton Court courses.
