A range of embroidery classes for all levels and techniques
« Day Classes
Please note this is an RSN Exclusive Onsite Bespoke Class held at Kensington Palace, London. Class size is limited to 14, so early booking is essential!
We are delighted to announce an exclusive Coronation Goldwork class to be held at Kensington Palace to celebrate their acclaimed exhibition, Royal Style in the Making and our contribution to the show. This class will be held in the State Bed Chamber and students will also visit the exhibition which features never-before-seen objects from The Royal Collection and the unique relationship between fashion designer and royal client.
The class is steeped in history from the stunning gold motif you will create to the classroom where you will be stitching. The design is based on the embroidery stitched by the Royal School of Needlework for the 1937 coronation gown of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, consort of King George VI and the class will be taught in the Royal State Bed Chamber, the room where Queen Victoria awoke to discover she would become the future Queen of England!
RSN Tutor, Sarah de Rousset-Hall will teach this stunning design featuring a shamrock and an acorn - both of which feature on the rare surviving toile you will see at Royal Style in the Making. Your design will be worked on purple silk dupion using gilt and metallic threads, echoing the RSN’s embroidery on both her coronation dress and robe.
This unique class covers many of the embroidery techniques used on these garments including Trellis, Chipping, Couching and Applique. You will also add felt padding to the acorn to give it extra dimension and sparkle. The finished design measures approximately 5cm by 5cm and is photographed in a 4” hoop.
Your RSN kit includes: purple silk dupion with printed design, gold kid leather, assorted metal and metallic threads, sewing thread, a beeswax crown, a mini velvet board, wool felt for padding and all the needles required to stitch the design.
The class is suitable for all levels, although some embroidery experience would be helpful. Your kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
This event includes a ticket to Royal Style in the Making which you will visit with Sarah after a short lunch break. In addition to the Toile, you will see Diana, Princess of Wales’s wedding dress with panels of antique Carrickmacross lace that had originally belonged to Queen Mary and was supplied by the RSN. If you wish, you will also be able to visit the other exhibits on show at the Palace, after your class finishes at 4.30pm and before the Palace gates close at 6pm.
