ONL030 Drawing Basics for Beginners — Thursday 7 August
ONL032 Colour Theory in Practice — Tuesday 25 August
ONL033 From Drawing to Design — Friday 28 August

Please note that this is an online class, taken from home. This class will run online on Friday 7 August from 10am - 4pm UK BST with a 15-minute break in the morning, plus an hour for lunch.

Bookings for this class will close on Wednesday 5 August

This is part of the Core Drawing and Design Skills group of day classes. It will help to have done Drawing Basics or have some previous experience of drawing before you take this class.

Tone – how light or dark something is. If you’re working on Silk Shading in embroidery, want to understand how tone is created with line in both black on white, and in white mark-making, (useful for Blackwork and Whitework embroidery), or just want a better understanding of how to make things look 3-D in your drawing, this class is for you.

We will work with graphite, charcoal (or charcoal pencil) to explore how to create a wide range of tones, do a classic tonal modelling exercise in drawing and apply that learning to simple forms. We will also look at the use of toned paper as a starting point, and using white in media such as coloured pencils, wax crayons or oil pastels to explore the reverse.

By the end you will:
· understand how to create a tonal scale and use it
· model subjects in tone
· apply that to observational drawing.
· Work with other media: charcoal pencil, white pencil/ wax crayon/ gel pen/ oil pastel
· Work on different toned backgrounds
· work light on dark.

Structure of the Day:
Login in using the link provided beforehand ready to start at 10am. We will have breaks around 11a.m and for lunch between 1pm and 2pm.

If you want direct feedback on your work from Caroline, share your photos with her via WhatsApp or email during the day.

Materials
A4 sketchbook.
Please gather whatever art materials you have. These are what we recommend:
• B and 2B graphite pencils.
• a tin of at least 12 good quality colour pencils.
• Water soluble pencils will give you more options, in which case add round and flat brushes and water pots.

For anyone who wants to learn or practice their skills of drawing from close observation, a useful skill for creating your own designs. This Day Class feeds into and builds on the Drawing and Design for Embroidery 3 day course. Some basic drawing skills will be useful as we will be doing some observational drawing.
