The design for this exclusive RSN class was inspired by Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation robe, stitched by the Royal School of Needlework Studio in 1953 with the theme of Peace and Plenty. This was symbolised by olives and wheat and was very appropriate for a post-war period still under food rationing.

The Royal School of Needlework’s link to coronation robes goes all the way back to the 1902 coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra, and the School was commissioned to do work on all of the 20th Century coronations.

The 1953 Coronation was held in June, and in March of that year the RSN was commissioned to complete the Goldwork for the robe, the whole outfit having been designed by Norman Hartnell. The RSN Collection includes some of the early designs and sketches for the embroidery as well as the sampler that was sent to the palace for approval.

This class covers several of the techniques used on the coronation robe including Cutwork, Chipping, Couching and Applique as well as the associated Padding techniques to create a 3 dimensional effect.

This is an Intermediate to Advanced level class, so some experience of embroidery (although not necessarily Goldwork) would be preferable.

The class kit includes everything you require to complete the project. You will need your own embroidery scissors and an 8”/20cm hoop.
