The first Valentine’s cards were sent in the 18th century. These wonderful handmade creations were adorned with romantic symbols including flowers and love knots, as well as including puzzles and quoting lines of poetry. The finished masterpiece could then be slipped discreetly under a door, or tied to a doorknocker leaving the lucky recipient to ponder who had sent it.

Georgian Britain saw the first pre-printed Valentine’s cards appear and during the Victorian era the industrialisation of Britain made the mass production and delivery of cards a reality. Cards featured elaborate paper lacework, embossing and other intricate design imagery including flowers, love knots and of course Cupid. The more elaborate the design the more expensive the card so the recipients knew how much had been spent on them!

The 19th Century saw the advent of the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day as its popularity extended across the ocean to the USA who eagerly adopted this custom. In 1913 Hallmark Cards stamped their name on the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day with the production of their very first card.

RSN Tutor Helen Stevens has designed two beautiful small heart brooches which present a perfect opportunity to create your own Valentine card and gift.  This online class is suitable for all levels and stitches used in this project include Split Stitch, Long and Short Stitch and Stem Stitch, with added sparkle from the addition of Swarovski sew on crystals. Made into a pin brooch and presented on a blank card for you personalise and send to your loved one, or if you can't bear to part with it then keep for yourself!

The class kit will be posted out to you. The kit includes all the materials you require to complete the project. It would be useful to have a pencil and paper in case you wish to take extra notes and a pair of embroidery scissors  and a 4" or 6″ hoop, a small paint brush and a little PVA glue will be needed.
