Monday 9 , 16 & 23 May 2022

For the Rest of the World bookings will close on Monday 25 April to allow for the kit to be posted out in time for the class.

For UK and Europe bookings will close on Monday 2 May to allow for the kit to be posted out in time for the class.

Please note that the cost includes the necessary kit and tracked postage.

As a keen gardener the tutor has always loved the ideas and images of the Green Man, the pagan symbol of Spring and in her mind, guardian of nature. Many churches have Green Man carvings in them and it is believed the symbol was used as a bridge between Christianity and the Pagan beliefs it was trying to replace. The church where she grew up in the UK has a Green Man carving on the font.

Over her embroidery career which includes an Apprenticeship at the RSN she has stitched a few versions of green men; one was a metal thread face, called ‘Woodface’ that was stitched in 1994 for a RSN exhibition, it won a prize and was subsequently sold; the start of a lifetime of exhibiting and selling her work.

This Green Man is a perfect project for those new to embroidering faces. The eyes are worked using Satin Stitch, changing direction to create a realistic eye. The ‘skin’ is worked in Long and Short Stitch using a single strand of stranded cotton. There is no shading so you can really concentrate on your stitches. The leaves are stitched in Fly Stitch, using No.8 cotton perle, this gives the piece texture and the leaves look slightly raised but no padding is needed.

There will be plenty of opportunity during the class to ask the Tutor questions and in advance of the class all preparation information will be emailed to you along with an invitation to join the class on the day.

Your Zoom link will be sent a minimum of 48 hours prior to the class and will be sent to the email address you booked the class with. If you do not receive it, check your junk mail to see if it is there and if you still do not have it then please email [email protected]

The class kit will be posted out to you. The kit includes all the materials you require to complete the project. It would be useful to have a pencil and paper in case you wish to take extra notes and a pair of embroidery scissors  and an 8" hoop will be needed.

All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.
