Class: To celebrate the RSN's 150th birthday, this sumptuous little butterfly has been created in the style of original brooches dating from 1937 which were made with scraps of King George VI's and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother's Coronation Robe velvet. Using royal purple silk velvet, RSN Tutor, Kate Barlow, will show you how to create your own brooch, embellished with Goldwork techniques, seed beads and crystals, before adding the body of wire wrapped in silk thread.  (The 1937 brooch is featured in our image gallery).

Your class kit includes everything you need to complete the embroidered brooch including a comprehensive instruction booklet and a 5 inch embroidery hoop. All you will need is a pair of sharp embroidery scissors.  The class kit will be posted out to you.

Talk: After a 30 minute lunch break, you will be joined at 1pm by our Curator, Dr Susan Kay-Williams who will give you a brief illustrated talk focusing on the 1937 Coronation and relevant objects from the RSN Collection, including the original velvet brooches made by servicemen.

All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.
