Alena Chenevix Trench
Alena’s love of handcraft has persisted beyond a 20-year career in nursing. Initially taking a Certificate & Diploma in Hand Embroidery, she has worked as an embroiderer in the RSN Embroidery Studio for two years. She graduated from the RSN Future Tutors programme in July 2018 and received the Clothworkers’ Award for Top Student for 2018. In addition, she has a City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
Alena has participated in several high-profile RSN projects including the Naomie Harris Oscar Dress; the Nicholas Oakwell Couture ostrich feather gown for the GREAT Britain Campaign; and the ‘Whitewalker’ for HBO’s Game of Thrones. She has demonstrated for Burberry’s Makers House in partnership with The New Craftsmen; and at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London for ‘Making it: Careers in Fashion’.
At the RSN, Alena has assisted teaching on Day Classes, Tour & Taster workshops and on the RSN BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery Degree. She most recently assisted on the Summer Intensive programme at Hampton Court Palace, and at the RSN USA Summer School in Lexington Kentucky. Externally, she has taught Learning Curves at The Knitting & Stitching Shows.
Some of her pieces have been exhibited at The Knitting & Stitching Shows, at the RSN exhibitions at Hampton Court Palace, at The Creative Stitches Show and at The William Morris Society at Kelmscott House, London. Some of them have also been featured in editorial and her Appliqué ‘Moonlight’ piece was used in the book, RSN Appliqué Techniques (2016) by Kate Cross.
Her Silk Shaded ‘Leopard’ has been made into RSN limited edition greeting cards, available to buy from the RSN Shop.
Alena has also worked as a Senior Embroiderer at the British Haute Couture fashion house Ralph & Russo.
