Lucy May
Before coming to the Royal School of Needlework, Lucy gained a BA Hons in Fashion and Textiles Design, going on to work in High Street fashion retail buying and merchandising. After a move into footwear design and product development, Lucy opened her own successful award-winning boutique. Looking for a change of pace after having a family, Lucy took on the role of Commercial Development Manager for Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, where she discovered a love of teaching after developing and running the museum’s popular shoe design workshop programme. Lucy went on to set up her own business teaching design and textiles classes, enrolling on the Future Tutors programme in 2022 to develop her embroidery skills.
In 2024 Lucy was awarded First Place in the Hand Embroidery category of the Mr X Stitch Student Needlework Prize for her Blackwork piece, ”Handsome Devil”, a portrait of her father.
In 2025 Lucy was awarded Runner Up in the National Embroidery Awards.
During the course Lucy has taught workshops at the Knitting and Stitching shows at Alexandra Palace and the Stitch Festival London at the Business Design Centre, Islington. She has also assisted teaching on RSN Day Classes and Artisan Fayre workshops at Hampton Court Palace.
Lucy graduated from the Future Tutors Programme with Distinction in June 2025.
In 2023, Lucy was honoured to be part of the Embroidery Studio team at the Royal School of Needlework who worked on the Anointing Screen for the Coronation of King Charles III.
