Hand Embroidery: Skills and Studies FAQ

· How long is the course?

The course is module or subject based. Each module is 6 days of tuition taught either online, onsite (currently only in Durham, UK), and intensively.

· Will the course be available at other venues?

Yes, in time it will be, and all dates will be added to the website in due course.

· Does the course have a starting point, or can I choose which modules I would like to do?

As the course develops, you will be able to pick and choose the modules you would like to learn from. There is no set order, and no demand to learn them in sequence.

· Is the course available for beginners?

The course is available for beginners and all levels, and so far for all modules unless otherwise stated. It is a good starting point for beginners, and for non-beginners, an opportunity to learn more, and brush up on skill.

· How much does each module cost?

Each module, or six days of tuition is £750.00.

· Do I need to pay a deposit to reserve my place?

Yes, when you book you will be asked to pay a £50 deposit to secure your place. This is not refundable but will be offset against the price of the course when the balance is paid.

· Can the fee be paid by instalments?

Yes, if you request this when you book, you will be sent a payment plan.

· Do RSN Stitching Friends receive a discount?

No,  the RSN Stitching Friends discount is only available on selected Day Classes and Short Courses, it is not available for longer courses including the Skills and Studies course.

· What is the content of the course/module?

Each module is six days of tuition, and for each lesson you will learn four different techniques.

· What equipment will I need?

Basically, you will need a 10-inch hoop, scissors, and needles for most modules. The only exception is canvas work which is worked on stretcher bars. You will be advised on what you need in advance.

· Will there be any preparation?

Yes, there will be some minimal preparation in advance. Mainly preparation of your fabric.

· What is the maximum class size?

10 is the maximum class size whether online or onsite.

· Is the work assessed?

No, the work is not assessed.

· Is the course certificated?

Yes, you will be issued with a RSN e-certificate upon completion.

· How does the course compare to the RSN’s Certificate and Diploma?

This course is sampler based; therefore, it is not a finished mounted design. There is no assessment, and the teaching is taught in a group rather than individually within a group. You can choose the modules/subjects you’re interested in as they become available, there is no set order.

· How much work is involved?

During class, enough information will be given to continue the sampler in your own time. Each sample will vary in time scale.

· Can I book for more than one module at a time?

Yes, at present, this is possible.

· How much research is involved?

All the work is practical and designed to spark your own interests. It is there to ignite your own research, and to explore and invent further yourself.

· What should I do with the samples at the end of the course?

This depends very much on yourself, but they are there as an archive for further work. They can be made into a fabric book, mounted, or be left as samplers, and as a resource for further work.

· Will there be more module/subjects available in the future?

Yes, the course will continue to expand and develop, adding more modules of different subjects whether themed on technique, a design, or concept.

· Can I suggest ideas for future modules?

Yes, you can, and we will see if it can work, or be adapted to work?
