“I applied to the Degree Course because I had been studying textiles at college and definitely wanted to pursue this. When I came across the course online, I was so interested in how unique it was, and the amazing skills and opportunities that the students experience, that I wanted to find out more and attended an open day. The Open Day gave me a clearer insight into the Course and confirmed that it was the right choice for me. I applied straight away!
In my first year at the RSN, one of my projects was based around the idea of Celebration. My grandad was from the Caribbean where carnival is a huge summer event; so I took inspiration from the vibrant atmosphere and created bright abstract paintings from this. Using these designs, I translated it into a 3D mixed media embroidered textile piece. I love using mark making in my work, and so through exploring Caribbean culture in this project I started to create more playful and expressive marks that I continue to use in my embroidery.
My favourite moment at the RSN was receiving an award for Stitch Innovation by the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers for my Final Major Project which I am very proud of. This was just one of many great moments, alongside working on a project for The Duchess of Cambridge and visits from well-known industry guests.
Goldwork is definitely my favourite technique. It requires so much attention to detail and time but the outcome is so exciting. The combination of textures and added shine give an extra dimension to my work which I absolutely love!
I am currently in the process of sampling and testing out different designs that will potentially be for sale in the future! In 5 years’ time I would love to have established my own business selling embroidered products, and to have kept developing my ideas as a designer maker.
My advice for any students who are thinking of applying is to grab the opportunity! It’s a fantastic course with brilliant tutors who help you to develop and reach your potential over the three years. The experiences are second to none and provide you with a great start to your career.”
