Ecclesiastical Embroidery – Design and Stitch a Stole

Design, stitch and make up an ecclesiastical stole with guidance from tutor Heather Lewis. Design and stitch a simple design on the ends of the stole and a simple cross at the neck and learn how to create a stitch and colour plan. You will then learn how to prepare the frame, ready for the embroidery and transfer the design. The course will also cover several hand embroidery techniques suitable to use on a stole. The course is completed with guidance on making up the stole.

This class is spread over eleven short sessions with time to complete work between the sessions.

The class will begin with designing the embroidery on the ends and at the neck of the stole, so please prepare some design ideas before the first session. A list of all the class requirements will be sent in advance of the class.

Design Inspiration:

From earliest times, signs and symbols have been incorporated into Christian decoration. Look at historical designs and symbols in books and online. Other inspiration can come from the surroundings inside and around a church building. Perhaps there is an interesting stained glass window or ivy is growing around the church- both can be a starting point for a design. There are also many variations of the cross and can be incorporated into a design. However, try not to make the design too complicated, the design will be worked on both ends of the stole.
