Basketry Workshop

Nina Brabbins graduated from the RSN Degree in 2018 and her Final Major Project was entitled ‘Sea Change – Tropism’ which represented how “the lack of connectivity with the natural world is resulting in the ever growing environmental issue of plastic waste both on the land and in the oceans.”

Nina is now taking her interest in exploring the human effect on the natural world one step further and taught two workshops in the Bristol area, entitled ‘Coil Basketry with Beach Plastic’.  In the workshop students learnt how to re-use wasted fishing gear and sea plastic to create a new, handmade bowl or place matt.  They learnt the basic process of coil basketry and at least one stitch that can be used in this technique, using natural yarn and plastic ghost nets.

The workshops took place at the Bristol Textile Quarter and at St Werburghs Community Centre.
