‘Talking Textiles’ is a trends magazine, published by Li Edelkoort of the New York ‘Trend Union’. Since 1980, founder Li has predicted creative trends in fashion, colour, textile, lifestyle and architecture. She has been at the forefront of nearly every major trend, while creating an international family. In 2011, Li launched an interactive online trend forum called TrendTablet.com and, since 2015, she is the Dean of Hybrid Studies at New York’s ‘Parsons School of Design I The New School’.
The fifth issue of ‘Talking Textiles’ is dedicated to the Great Generation of 2020. Divided into emerging trends and filled with work by 100 global graduates from 36 international design and textiles institutions, this is possibly the most expansive gathering of contemporary textile talent ever! With extra pages, the bumper edition delivers multiple messages of hope for a different kind of future.
The sudden changes in graduates’ lives caused by the pandemic have shaken them out of a state of leisure and comfort, and on a profound quest for an alternative tomorrow. With strategic acumen, some moved from the city to the country, and discovered how to live and work in an independent manner; foraging, collecting, washing, dyeing and cooking textiles into a state of grace and beauty.
As publisher Li Edelkoort observes, : “With admirable courage and artistic insight, these young designers changed proportions, modified waste, invented looms and made the most of this extraordinary moment in time; a moment in which one can grow, giving students space to restore their faith in the fibre of society. These creative textile makers have decided to turn the page and change our world for the better. They are truly the first generation of a new era.”
