‘Embroidered Arts’ Exhibition Talks & Workshops

26th October, 2021

As the Royal School of Needlework’s anniversary falls on 5 November, it seems only fitting that we will be giving Talks and teaching Workshops at Hand & Lock’s ‘Embroidered Arts’ exhibition. We would love for you to join us in celebration:

TALKS:

From 12pm-1.30pm, RSN Chief Executive, Dr Susan Kay-Williams, and RSN Degree Senior Lecturer and Costume History Specialist, Amy Hare, will give two Talks.

12-12.45pm, Susan will present ‘Technical Excellence with Artistic Innovation: The Forward-Looking Royal School of Needlework’
Susan’s talk will highlight how the RSN approaches its teaching – technique first – and then challenges students to develop their own ideas so that the work of each student is personal, individual and unique. The RSN will reach a significant milestone in 2022 and Susan will reveal how we see this as a springboard for the future, not just a reflection on the past.

12.45-1.30pm, Amy will present ‘Object Lessons: Embroidery & Self-Fashioning in the Royal School of Needlework Collection
Amy will use a series of object case studies to explore how the RSN’s Collection of historic textiles has been used to inspire and delight students of hand embroidery.

WORKSHOPS

We are also teaching two beautiful ‘Heart’ 90 minute workshops on the Friday 5 November:

2-3.30pm: ‘Hearts & Flowers’ – An Introduction to Surface Stitched Embroidery
To work this cheerful posy of delicate flowers, you will learn a variety of traditional surface stitches: Stem Stitch, Detached Chain, French Knots and Seeding Stitch. On completion, you will be able to stitch the pretty heart on to your jacket or bag, turn it into a special card, lavender sachet, or frame it to become a work of art!

3.45-5.15pm: ‘Heart of Gold’ – An introduction to Goldwork Embroidery
Create a sparkly keepsake using a variety of basic Goldwork techniques including Couching, Chipping, Cutwork, Plunging and tying back thread ends.
