New Classes in Portsmouth

31st January, 2019

We are delighted to announce our new collaboration with The D-Day Story in Portsmouth.  The D-Day Story is the only museum in the UK dedicated to the allied landings in June 1944 (codenamed ‘Operation Overlord’) and features the unique 272 feet ‘Overlord Embroidery’ which was created by the Royal School of Needlework.

The ‘Overlord Embroidery’ was hand stitched by a team of 20 RSN specialist stitchers, taking five years to create, with the final panel completed in January 1974.  The embroidery consists of 34 panels, each 8 feet long and 3 feet high.  It is 41 feet longer than the 11th century Bayeux Tapestry and in many ways is the modern day counterpart.  One of the things that makes this piece so special is that, although created over 25 years after the events it depicts, the RSN sourced the original fabrics for the uniforms.

We will be teaching a series of classes at The D-Day Story museum in Portsmouth which are inspired by the ‘Overlord Embroidery’.  The classes will run on 22 March (Appliqué), 24 May (Blackwork) and 5 July (Goldwork). Each class costs £84 (plus the kit cost of £25) and run from 10.45am – 4.45pm.
