In this recorded talk, artist and researcher Gimena Romero explores the traditional and modern styles of embroidery thriving in Mexico, and how local communities use stitch to make art and tell stories that transcend time and culture.

Gimena takes viewers on a journey through Mexico’s rich embroidery heritage, drawing on her practice and her book The Embroidery of Mexico. The work examines the symbolic language of stitch, tracing its threads from indigenous communities to contemporary urban streetscapes, and keeps these stunning traditions of Mexican artistry alive.

Based in Mexico City, Gimena is an expert on distinct regional styles including Tenango, Street, Mazahua and Purépecha embroidery, as well as experimental practices such as Lavin (using human hair). She also works with fruit-based filler stitches such as Open Banana, Pineapple, Strawberry and Woven Watermelon.
