Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10am-4pm at The Aga Khan Centre, 10 Handyside Street, London N1C 4DN.

Join us for a Goldwork Experience Class at the stunning Aga Khan Centre in the heart of the Knowledge Quarter in re-generated King's Cross. You will also be treated to a curator-led visit to AKC's latest exhibition, The Canticle of the Birds.

Inspired by RSN Tutor Kate Pankhurst's exhibited goldwork piece ‘Wings of Reflection’, this one day class explores traditional goldwork embroidery through a contemporary design. Participants will stitch a stylised Hoopoe bird, a central motif in the Canticle and a symbol of wisdom and guidance.

The day begins with a tour of the exhibition in the gallery, an extraordinary space including Kate's goldwork embroidery, providing visual context and inspiration for your stitching. Using a specially designed goldwork kit in orange gilt threads, students will learn to work with two sizes of pearl purl, bright check and sequins, developing confidence and precision in essential goldwork techniques.

This class is suitable for beginners to goldwork, as well as embroiderers
wishing to consolidate their skills. Guided by expert tuition, by day’s end
participants will have a strong foundation in goldwork and a striking
embroidered piece in progress.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project afterwards.  You will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day and please bring a thimble.

The class runs from 10.00am to 4pm at The Aga Khan Centre, 10 Handyside Street, London N1C 4DN. Please arrive by 9.45am. Visit - Aga Khan Centre

Canticle of the Birds is a mixed-media exhibition inspired by the Sufi poet Farid al-Din Attar, exploring themes of spiritual journey, transformation, and interconnectedness. Organised in partnership with The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, the Royal School of Needlework, Drawing for the Planet, Songbird Survival, Kings Cross Academy, and Wendy Morrison Design, the exhibition brings together international artists, artisans, and young creators in collaborative projects.

Attar’s 12th-century Persian poem The Conference of the Birds tells the allegorical story of birds on a quest for the mythical simurgh, guided by the hoopoe, each bird representing a human flaw or attachment.
