In this online three-session ‘silk and metal thread embroidery’ course, join Becky and learn the skills of this beautiful hand embroidery technique. The Elephant Hawk-Moth is so called because in the caterpillar stage it looks like an elephant’s trunk! As an adult this large moth is easily identified with its beautiful gold/mossy green and fuchsia pink colouration. It feeds on honeysuckle and other tubular flowers from May to early August.

This design combines historic metal thread work techniques in a selection of fine wires, hand dyed silk/metal ribbons (plate) and gold passing thread and is built up using layers of silk satin and craft felt before the delicate embroidered metals are applied. Learn how to master stitches including brick couching, applying silk purls, applying silk plate, couching cords, and cutwork.

You will be guided step by step through this project with clear video demonstrations and screen shared images, supported by an illustrated instruction booklet that comes with your kit. In addition, a specific WhatsApp group will be set up to enable the sharing of work in progress images and for the tutor to give instant feedback during the class. The finished embroidery measures 10x8cm.

You can explore many more stitches in the RSN Stitch Bank.
