£200.00
This is an exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust Experience Class to be held at Windsor Castle on Wednesday 1 October 2025.
Join us at Windsor Castle, the magnificent 900 year old Royal residence and fortress, to stitch this beautiful Star of Bethlehem design inspired by a botanical study by Leonardo da Vinci. You'll also enjoy a rare and exclusive curator-led private view of his original drawing and more of his works in the stunning Print Room within the Castle. The rooms house some of most important collections of works on paper in the world including around 550 of Leonardo’s original drawings.
During the class, RSN Tutor, Natalie Rowe will introduce you to to a number of surface stitches chosen to reflect the mark making and delicate shading of the original drawing. Van Dyke stitch and raised chain band create the impression of shadows between the leaves, imitating the strokes of Leonardo’s study, while seeding, in a delicate silk thread, softly shades the background.
The outlines are worked in stem stitch, chain stitch and back stitch, and finally details are added to the flowers using detached chain stitches and French knots. All the stitches will be covered on the day and you will be provided with a detailed instruction booklet to enable you to complete the design after the class.
This class is suitable for all levels of skill from beginner to advanced. Your kit will include everything you require to complete the project after the class. You may like to bring your own lights or magnifiers (battery operated only), but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. Please do not bring your own scissors.
This event includes a Curator's private view of Leonardo da Vinci's works housed in the Print Room at Windsor Castle
The Royal Collection holds around 550 of Leonardo’s drawings – the most important group in the world. Only a small proportion of these drawings are connected directly with his paintings and other artistic projects, most of which were never realised.
The remainder were Leonardo's attempt to record and understand the infinite variety of the world around him, for he always maintained that an image transmitted knowledge more accurately and more concisely than words. Leonardo's drawings therefore allow a unique insight into the thoughts, researches and vision of one of the greatest minds of the Renaissance.
The Print Room houses one of the most important collections of works on paper in the world and also includes drawings by Canaletto, and Hans Holbein.
The rooms were laid out by Prince Albert in the 1850s and featured frequently in Queen Victoria’s diary entries, demonstrating what a special place it was for the couple. Prince Albert commissioned the architect John Thomas to create the glass-fronted oak cabinets that line the walls and an ornate plaster ceiling, designed to make visitors feel as if they have stepped into an Italian palazzo.
Works on paper are fragile, so the conditions in the rooms are carefully controlled, with humidity, light and temperature monitored. The collection is only accessible through research appointments and special group visits.
