TTOT191 The Litany of Loreto and the History of Embroidery
The Litany of Loreto and the History of Embroidery
Former RSN Chief Executive, Dr Susan Kay-Williams
2026 heralds the launch of the RSN's long-awaited History of Embroidery online course prepared by more than a dozen leading curators, academics, and practitioners. The course covers embroidery (predominantly in Britain) from the early Medieval period to the current day and includes fascinating information about embroidery techniques, acclaimed stitchers, and famous works such as the Litany of Loreto.
In this talk, Dr Susan Kay-Williams highlights the Litany of Loreto — twelve pieces which demonstrate the finest of embroidery making in a self-selected limited colour palette. The remarkable pieces were donated to the RSN in the 1970s and in the last decade we have learned more about these pieces, which she will share, although there are still several intriguing, unanswered questions.
Susan will also tell us more about the fascinating story of embroidery throughout the ages and share details about our new course and the people who contributed to it.
