TTOT200 – Observing Nature Through Thread
With textile artist, Meredith Woolnough. Wednesday 23 September, 7pm UK
Internationally recognised textile artist Meredith Woolnough has spent the past two decades developing her distinctive Sculptural Embroidery technique. Using free-motion machine embroidery stitched onto water-soluble fabric she create intricate, lace-like sculptures inspired by the hidden structures of the natural world.
In this artist talk, Meredith shares the creative journey behind her practice, from the early studies and experiments that led her to "draw" with a sewing machine to the nature-inspired works that have become her signature. Through photographs, sketchbooks and finished artworks, she explores how careful observation, scientific curiosity and contemporary embroidery techniques come together to reveal the remarkable patterns and networks found in leaves, coral, shells and other natural forms.
Along the way, Meredith offers a glimpse into her creative process, sharing how delicate thread drawings are transformed into sculptural artworks, while also reflecting on the themes that run throughout her practice, the evolution of her career, selected exhibitions and publications, and the joy of teaching thousands of students around the world.
Whether you're interested in contemporary embroidery, textile art or finding inspiration in nature, this talk offers a fascinating insight into a unique artistic practice.
