Having enjoyed the Christmas Festivities, our Future Tutors were back on site at the beginning of January, ready to get stuck into another busy term.  One of their first classes of the term was the beginning of their Gold Symbols module.  This teaches the fundamentals of Goldwork and how to handle the delicate materials used.  Goldwork is synonymous with both Royalty and Ecclesiastical vestments and is just one of the many techniques the RSN is famous for.

Our Future Tutors have also just been given the opportunity to design a special kit for the Learning Curves at The Knitting & Stitching Shows, due to take place in the autumn.  They have been asked to put forward designs which represent our 150th anniversary celebrations.  Staff in the Education Department will have the very difficult task of choosing one or two designs to go forward for the kits.  Once completed, the chosen kit designs will appear on The Knitting & Stitching website, ready for people to book the classes.

The Future Tutors Programme is now open for applications for the year starting September 2022.  If you would like a career in embroidery and love teaching, this course could be for you.  For further information, visit our website here.

Our 150th anniversary and a new stitch competition with Appletons Wool brings a double celebration!  Appletons Wool is giving you the chance to win £500 and have your stitch design marketed around the world in conjunction with the Royal School of Needlework.

To enter, design and stitch an embroidery or tapestry kit using the theme of Celebration and whatever it might mean to you. It could be bunting, a greeting card, a cushion, a picture or something not even thought of yet! Anyone can enter – professional or amateur.

The winning entry will not only receive the cash prize, but also have their kit marketed around the world under their name and the Appletons brand. The Royal School of Needlework’s logo will also be featured as a percentage of each sale will be kindly donated to us by Appletons.

So get your creative stitch juices flowing. The one requirement is that you only use Appletons Wool, and with 425 shades, that should leave plenty of scope for imagination. The closing date is 31 July 2022.

Visit the Appletons website for more details.

Happy Stitching and good luck!

Following the success of our first exhibition at Ely Cathedral in 2015, we will be returning this month to show more stunning pieces from our Collection, alongside contemporary fashion pieces from our Degree programme.  Highlights include the opportunity to see all 12 panels of the Litany of Loreto, which you will be able to see close up as well as a selection of beautiful christening robes from the RSN Collection.  The exhibition opens on 27 January and runs until 13 March.

Please visit Ely Cathedral’s website for more details and to book your ticket.

As next year is our 150th anniversary we are going to return to a face-to-face summer school at Hampton Court Palace, London to tie in with our exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum (also in London) and, as we have just heard, the display of the Queen’s Robe of Estate at Windsor Castle.

So, for eight weeks, from 4 July, we will be offering one five-day class at Hampton Court Palace each week.  Each session will be different, often based on something from the RSN’s unique Archive or Collection and led by a different RSN Tutor and will have only 12 places a week.  As part of the event there will also be tickets to visit the Fashion and Textile Museum and Windsor Castle as well as other special treats.

However, if coming to London is not an option we will be offering a mixture of 2, 3 day classes w/c 4 July for Australia/New Zealand time, w/c 11 July North American time and w/c 18 July UK time.   The five day classes will mostly be offered on north American time w/c 11 July with shorter classes being offered online on the other two time zones, subject to demand.

We will also include some RSN Talks and special events online, open to all those who have participated in any part of our International Summer School.

More information will be coming over the next few weeks so keep a look out for the International Summer School 2022 section of our website.  Booking will open in February for RSN Friends and past participants, then new students booking for the full weeks and in March for part weeks.

It is going to be a very exciting Summer School and we hope you will be able to join us in person or online.

We are never surprised by the range of requests that come through the door of our Embroidery Studio at Hampton Court Palace. We have been, and will always be, very diverse. This is one of the things that makes our Embroidery Studio so special and different to other organisations who tend to specialise in one area of textiles.

Back in the summer, we were commissioned to embroider 15 door hangers for a country club that were hosting a large number of very special guests for several weeks. Each door hanger featured an uplifting quote, accompanied by flowers and foliage. The quotes included:

“Sometimes… the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” By A.A. Milne

“A little magic can take you a long way.” By Roald Dahl

The lettering was transferred onto the background linen and stitched in Stem Stitch. The accompanying flowers were stitched free hand by our skilled embroiderers, as though working on a blank canvas. This allowed them to feel their way and put a little of themselves into each one. They were all made up with a rigid inner to protect them against wear and tear, and finished off with a hand twisted cord and delightful mini tassel.

It was such a fun project to work on, and it prompted lots of discussion with our team of embroiderers debating their favourite quotes. What is your favourite quote?

The winners of the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery 2021 tell us what it is like to have won such a prestigious award and their hopes for the future.

Kate Pankhurst, RSN Future Tutor Graduate 2021

“I was thrilled and shocked in equal measure to win not one, but two top prizes at Hand & Lock 2021. Throughout the third lockdown when I was stitching Lockdown O’Clock, I had quite a few moments of doubt; it was too hard to make, it was a silly idea or it was just not good enough. RSN Tutor, Marg Dier, mentored me throughout the process, and gave me so much kindness and confidence as well as technical assistance.

For my whole life, I’ve always felt ‘somewhere in the middle’ achievement-wise but all of that has changed now. Thanks to Hand & Lock, and the Worshipful Company of Gold & Silver Wyre Drawers, I have an unexpected windfall. I can’t think right now what to do with it, but I’d like to continue my studies alongside working as an Embroiderer.

Right now, I’ve just submitted a piece for the Broderer’s Exhibition, which is a ‘sibling’ of Lockdown O’Clock. I’m looking forward to teaching my ‘Mistletoe Kiss’ Christmas kit online for the RSN and need to get started on my next kit, ‘Tudor Embroidery Toolbox’, which I am teaching next January to March. I also want to offer something special for the RSN’s 150th Anniversary and I will be developing that too. This should keep me busy until Christmas!”

Lucy Martin, RSN Degree Graduate 2021

“I am absolutely over the moon to have won not just one but two prizes at the Hand & Lock Embroidered Arts exhibition. In the first few days of our induction onto the RSN BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery course, we were given a tour around Hand & Lock and I distinctly remember thinking how incredibly beautiful the pieces were and how it would be a dream come true to win a Hand & Lock Prize.

I am currently establishing myself as a professional hand embroidery practitioner and I plan to use the money from the Prizes to fund my business and grow my practice. It has been a whirlwind since Graduation and I am incredibly grateful for every project and piece of work that comes my way. This prize win has inspired me to push my business with my commissions, tutoring and wider projects to become a practitioner in my own right within the industry.”

Millie Whitehead, RSN Degree Graduate 2021
“Winning third prize in the Hand & Lock 2021 Prize for Embroidery has been a huge personal achievement for me. It has helped me to make a mark on the embroidery world and has given me great confidence in my own work. Moving forward with my career, I plan to continue to learn and develop my skills at the job I am lucky enough to have now,  at Alexander McQueen, working in the Embroidery Department. I am now extremely lucky to have secured a full-time position with McQueen, as it’s a company I have long admired and dreamed of working there.”

Rebecca Offredi, RSN Degree Graduate 2021

“I was so pleased to have been selected as a finalist for the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery. My main aim when entering the Prize was to have my work displayed in the exhibition as a finalist so to win a prize as well was an unexpected and added bonus! I have an established career as a Freelance Hand Embroiderer, which I love and for which I am so grateful. Since coming third in the Hand & Lock Prize, I plan to use the publicity generated from this to continue to build my business and brand and to see what new opportunities it may bring. In addition, I also plan to run some classes teaching useful skills for embroiderers who wish to become Freelance Embroiderers in the fashion industry.”

Sabina Lima, RSN 3rd year Degree Student

“Although my installation has an amount of very technical hand embroidery work, there is also a technological component that tries to push the boundaries of people’s preconceived notions of hand embroidery as a medium. I had not expected to be selected as a Finalist. Having Diana Springall as my Mentor and to receive the 3rd prize in the Textile Art Open Category, without having finished my Degree in Hand Embroidery, was certainly a very welcome recognition of my work, and gives me a lot of motivation to keep pushing on.”
