Join us at Canterbury Cathedral to embroider this beautiful Dove of Peace and enjoy a rare opportunity to visit The Huguenot Chapel given to the refugee French Protestant Huguenots by Queen Elizabeth I more than 400 years ago.

The Dove motif was designed by the Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Studio and is evocative of the Huguenot Dove you'll see on stonework within the Chapel. The design is worked onto a dark blue Irish linen, while the bird is Appliquéd in an ivory silk satin.

On the day, RSN Tutor, Helen Stevens will teach you all of the techniques you need to know to complete the kit including: Appliqué, Bayeux Stitch, Couching (thread and Japanese passing), Fishbone Stitch and Stem Stitch.

This class is suitable for all levels and your kit will include everything you require to complete the project after the class. You may like to bring your own magnifiers but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.

The Huguenot Chapel

The Huguenot Chapel was originally the Black Prince’s Chantry where he expected to be buried, but his tomb is in a place of honour in the Trinity Chapel and hanging above it are replicas of his Achievements which were made by the Royal School of Needlework on commission by the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral.

Queen Elizabeth I gave the Huguenot Chapel to the refugee French Protestant Huguenots, who first fled to Britain over 400 years ago, and again in the late 17th century when persecuted by Louis XIV.

Services are still held in French every Sunday afternoon. This Chapel is not normally open to the public but it will be opened especially for the Class on this occasion.

RSN and The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral have a long history of collaboration. In 1935 Dr E W Tristam designed a fabulous Friends of Canterbury Cathedral banner which was embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework.

This event includes entrance to the Cathedral.  You will be able to visit the Cathedral  after the class until 5pm.  In addition, you are cordially invited to attend Evensong  which takes place at 17.30 for approximately 45 minutes in the Quire. This will be an opportunity to hear Canterbury Cathedral's world-famous musicians if you choose to attend.

Joining Instructions:

Registration commences at 9.45am and please meet the Shepherds at the Christ Church Gate or the Welcome Centre who will guide you to the Community Studio overlooking the main entrance to the Cathedral.

Complimentary coffee and tea will be served on arrival, but please note that in general, food and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed  in the classroom. Please bring a packed lunch to eat in a designated space or you might like to visit the Cathedral Lodge Lounge. The Lounge Bar offers a full light lunch and beverage menu, served between 10am-4pm daily.

Blue Badge Parking: there is limited parking on site and this must be booked in advance with [email protected] but cannot be guaranteed.
