Create your own embroidery inspired by 7th-century horse harness fitting, using authentic materials designed by historian and RSN Fellow Dr Alexandra Makin

This kit is part of the Authentic Places Collection. The design is inspired by a horse harness fitting was found during archaeological excavations in St John’s Street, Winchester. The colourway is inspired by the 7th-century metal purse lid discovered in the Sutton Hoo Ship Burial, Suffolk.
The finished embroidery is 8cm x 6cm. The design is handprinted onto the linen ground fabric handwoven to the specifications of the original Bayeux Tapestry fabric. The embroidery is worked in crewel wool threads that are hand dyed with natural dyes, creating similar tones to those seen across early medieval art forms. The kit includes all the materials needed to construct the complete design. It also includes a handmade needle based on archaeological finds from the period and a full colour instruction booklet with complete instructions.
The embroidery incorporates six different stitches:
