Join RSN tutor Helen McCook online for our Technical Tuesday class as we dive into the world of canvas stitches. In this class you will try out a variety of different types of canvas including mono canvas, double Penelope, silk gauze and even linen and aida. You will also experiment with a variety of threads and colours on your chosen canvas exploring thread mixing, colour theory, canvas shading and thread blending. This will help broaden your knowledge of canvas stitches.
This course is aimed at the beginner embroiderer and runs over three terms of ten weeks each. Please note that this is an online class. Click here to view important joining information about online classes.
Term Two will run from 5pm - 7pm UK on the following eight Mondays and two Tuesdays:
April 13 and 20 (no class on 27);
May 4, 11, 18 and 26;
June 1, 8, 15 and 23
Course Information
- What is the best size of canvas/fabric for your project? We will try out various types of canvas including mono canvas in various sizes, double Penelope, silk gauze and even weave linen and aida.
- What is the optimum thread coverage for your chosen canvas size? We will trial different threads to find the best coverage for your chosen canvas.
- How do we know how much thread to order when working with canvas?
- Thread mixing - exploring the range of textures we can achieve.
- Colour mixing - looking at tonal palettes and colour blending.
- We will touch on colour theory and how this can impact in canvas work.
- Canvas shading - we will explore this subject with a number of different motifs/samples.
- Canvas stitches - we will look at how we form a number of different stitches. How do we compromise the varying stitches to create a hard edge to the form.
- How does thread blending affect the effect.
- How does colour placement affect the effect.
- How to choose stitches to create a visual language which makes sense within a design to emphasise perspective, form, texture and depth by manipulating stitch type, texture, scale, thread texture, colour and stitch placement.

Requirements
For this class you will be required to purchase the following ahead of the course start date. A reminder of this list will also be circulated closer to the course start date to ensure no student is without their equipment.
Fabrics:
- Mono Canvas (10, 14 and 18 Count): half a metre of each count
- Double Penelope (10 Count): Fat quarter
- Silk Gauze (32 and 56 count): 10cm square of each count
- Even weave linen (Belfast, Cashel, Edinburgh): Fat Quarter
- Aida, Tula: Fat Quarter
- Mid- to heavy-weight Calico: half a metre
Needles
- Tapestry needles (sizes: 28, 24, 20, 18)
- Embroidery needle (size 7)
Threads
- Any palette of blues, shades light to dark
- Appletons wool, stranded cotton and Perles.
