£210.00
This is an exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust Experience Class to be held at Windsor Castle on 3 June 2025.
Spend the day with us at Windsor Castle, the magnificent 900 year old Royal residence and fortress, to stitch this charming botanical silk shaded design and enjoy a rare and exclusive curator-led private view of the Print Room which houses some of most important collections of works on paper in the world.
The design is inspired by the work of the Seventeenth Century English entomologist, gardener and botanical artist Alexander Marshal (c.1620- 1682). His extensive ‘florilegium’, a collection of four albums of paintings of flora and fauna was presented to George IV in the 1820s and now forms part of the Royal Collection, a selection from which will be available to view on the day.
Using a selection of vibrant, pure silk threads and stitching on an ivory silk fabric, you will learn how to recreate this charming design using the technique of silk shading or ‘painting with a needle’. You will be introduced to and guided in the technique and given useful tips and techniques including how to stitch with multiple needles and how to blend colours to create a natural and realistic effect. No previous experience of this technique is necessary for you to enjoy this class as it is suitable for all levels of ability.
The class cost includes all materials and necessary equipment, although you may like to bring your own lights and magnifiers should you need them and your own embroidery scissors should you prefer. You will be able to borrow ring frames on the day. All aspects of the design will be covered during the class and a fully illustrated instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the design at home.
This class is suitable for all levels of skill from beginner to advanced. Your kit will include everything you require to complete the project after the class. You may like to bring your own lights or magnifiers (battery operated only), but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. Please do not bring your own scissors.
This event includes a Curator's private view of The Print Room at Windsor Castle
The Print Room at Windsor Castle houses one of the most important collections of works on paper in the world including drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Canaletto, and Hans Holbein.
The rooms were laid out by Prince Albert in the 1850s and featured frequently in Queen Victoria’s diary entries, demonstrating what a special place it was for the couple. Prince Albert commissioned the architect John Thomas to create the glass-fronted oak cabinets that line the walls and an ornate plaster ceiling, designed to make visitors feel as if they have stepped into an Italian palazzo.
Works on paper are fragile, so the conditions in the rooms are carefully controlled, with humidity, light and temperature monitored. The collection is only accessible through research appointments and special group visits.
Your visit will be truly exclusive as Windsor Castle will be closed to the public on the days our embroidery classes take place.
