An Exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust event to be held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh on Tuesday 21 October

Join us in October for an exclusive hand embroidery class inspired by the highly anticipated exhibition, Drawing the Italian Renaissance at The King's Gallery, Edinburgh. Your day will also include an expert-led highlights tour of the exhibition.

The Renaissance period saw a dramatic transformation in the way that artists worked, with a new-found appreciation for creativity pushing artistic boundaries. Drawing became central to this development, evolving from an essential tool of workshop practice to an exciting art form in its own right.

RSN Tutor, Helen Mc Cook has created this stunning Lily design inspired by a (c. 1475) drawing thought to have been worked by Leonardo da Vinci's associate, Andrea del Verrocchio.  During the class you will use a range of surface stitch techniques and explore mark making to evoke the delicate lines of the original artwork.

Your design will be worked in coloured stranded cotton threads on a blue background as the lily was traditionally used to represent the Annunciation and the Virgin Mary. Helen says: "I wanted to suggest this by the use of blue which has long standing associations with the Holy Mother." The highlighted areas of the design will include embellishments of  iridescent sequins and faux pearls.

This class is suitable for all levels of skill and your kit will contain everything you need to complete the design at home .  You may like to bring your own magnifiers (battery operated only please), but you will be able to borrow ring 8" Seat Frames and scissors on the day. Please do not bring your own scissors.

Drawing the Italian Renaissance (17 Oct 2025 - 1 Mar 2026)

Exploring the diversity and accomplishment of drawing across Italy between 1450 and 1600, the exhibition will feature around 80 works by over 50 artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian alongside lesser-known artists, all drawn from the Royal Collection, which holds one of the world’s greatest collections of Italian Renaissance drawings.

This exhibition brings together a wide range of drawings from this revolutionary artistic period, including 45 drawings never exhibited in Scotland before.
