SS25HCP27 Back to Basics: ‘Blackwork’
View map
£303.00
This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2025
This Back to Basics class you will give you an understanding of the principles of Shaded Blackwork.
This technique has evolved from the form that was popular during the reign of Henry VIII. The Tudors used Blackwork as decoration for clothing and its repeat patterns were worked in double running stitch so that it appeared the same from the front and back.
At the RSN, Blackwork is taught as a way of creating an embroidered image which has dimension through shading.
During this two day class you will work a series of samples to help you understand the essentials of counting a Blackwork pattern and shading created by the choice of thread. You will also interpret a design, giving you a chance to put these principles into practice. This class will be sample based and should help you with your own future projects.
Some previous embroidery experience would be helpful for this class, but is not essential. Beginners are welcome.
There will be plenty of opportunity during the class to ask the Tutor questions.
The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
