This design evokes the illuminated manuscripts of medieval Europe, which often included flowers, creatures and figures depicted in the borders and margins using gold leaf and rich coloured paint. Here, those are represented with gold kid leather and wonderful silk threads worked on parchment coloured linen. The design combines several different techniques at once, including Silk shading, Goldwork and surface stitches all working together to great this beautiful piece. This class is for stitchers at an Intermediate level, some experience of embroidery is advisable, but if you have not worked with silk or gold before then this is a great introduction.

Students will learn a variety of techniques from surface stitches including long and short, woven picots, stem and chain. To Goldwork techniques such as couching, working with kid leather and spangles. As well as learning how to handle and work with silk thread and using gold threads in combination with surface stitches. The finished design is approximately 16cm squared (6.5inches squared).

The class will be split over eight evening sessions, with each session focusing on a different technique and time to stitch at your own pace in between classes.

The kit contains, instructions, threads, needles and the fabric with the design already drawn on. Students will need to have their own 10-inch hoop or equivalent size frame, and a basic sewing kit. Plus, ideally a ruler, black fine-liner pen, embroidery scissors, small sharp point paper scissors (an old pair of blunted embroidery scissors is perfect). A notepad and pen should you wish to take notes.

Warning: Not suitable for small children, kit contains sharp objects.

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
