PL101 Goldwork Embroidery inspired by The Queen Mother’s Coronation Gown: RSN Experience Class at Polesden Lacey
£170.00
We are delighted to announce our first RSN Experience class at Polesden Lacey, a spectacular National Trust Edwardian house and estate in the Surrey Hills.
Join us for a Coronation Goldwork class and a private view with the curator of their new exhibition, Dress to Impress (opening on 2 May). The exhibition delves into the nuanced language of dress to unravel coded messages about power, politics, and personality.
RSN Tutor, Sarah de Rousset-Hall will teach this stunning motif based on the embroidery stitched by the Royal School of Needlework for the 1937 coronation gown of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, consort of King George VI. The Queen Mother had strong ties with Polesden Lacey and in 1923, she and the Duke of York spent part of their honeymoon at the country retreat formerly owned by renowned Edwardian hostess, Mrs Margaret Greville.
Your design, featuring a shamrock and an acorn, will be worked on purple silk dupion using gilt and metallic threads, echoing the RSN’s embroidery on The Queen Mother's coronation dress and robe. During the class you will learn embroidery techniques including trellis, chipping, couching and appliqué. You will also add felt padding to the acorn to give it extra dimension and sparkle. The finished design measures approximately 5cm by 5cm and is photographed in a 4” hoop.
Your RSN kit includes: purple silk dupion with printed design, gold kid leather, assorted metal and metallic threads, sewing thread, a beeswax crown, a mini velvet board, wool felt for padding and all the needles required to stitch the design.
The class is suitable for all levels, although some embroidery experience would be helpful. All necessary equipment will be provided, but you may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and battery operated magnifiers (if needed) on the day.
This event includes a highlights private view of Dress to Impress with National Trust curator, Alice Strickland.
Fashion is infused throughout Polesden Lacey, brimming with opulence and luxury. Four paintings have been conserved at the Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio, Knole, especially for the exhibition including Johann Zoffany’s portrayal of Eva Maria Garrick. Displays include new creations by costume undergraduates from Wimbledon College of Art, inspired by Margaret Greville’s Devonshire House Ball photograph album.
