Please note this is an Exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust event to be held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh on Sunday 1 September.

We are delighted to continue our partnership with Royal Collection Trust with this exclusive hand embroidery class inspired by the acclaimed exhibition, Style & Society: Dressing the Georgians at the King's Gallery, Edinburgh.

Your day will include an expert-led highlights tour of the exhibition where you will see some of the most magnificent portraits, clothing items and accessories on display.

RSN Tutor, Helen Mc Cook has created this stunning thistle design inspired by the portrait of George IV wearing full Highland dress (painted by Edinburgh-trained artist David Wilkie) as well as the engraved patterns on the accoutrements which the King wore which were made by George Hunter of Prince’s Street, Edinburgh.

The King's sitting at the Palace of Holyroodhouse would have been a glittering and spectacular affair and Helen has utilised golden and coloured metal threads plus diamanté to emulate the engravings of the metal dirk and sword.

During your class you will work onto tartan silk dupion using couched Japanese, rococo and passing, over stretched pearl purl, sequins, round and shaped diamanté, s-ing, chain stitch and feather stitch in cut metal threads.

This class is suitable for all levels of skill and your kit will contain everything you need to complete the design at home .  You may like to bring your own magnifiers (battery operated only please), but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. Please do not bring your own scissors.

This event includes an expert-led viewing of exhibition highlighting what fashion can tell us about life in 18th-century Britain, a revolutionary period of trade, travel and technology which fuelled fashion trends across all levels of society. You'll discover the Georgians’ style story and get up close to magnificent paintings, prints and drawings by artists including Gainsborough, Zoffany and Hogarth, as well as luxurious textiles, sparkling jewellery, and a range of accessories from snuff boxes to swords.
