This course is designed as a technical deep dive into silk shading, also known as thread painting or long and short stitch. Rather than focusing on a finished design, students will work on calico, creating a series of small sample studies (3 × 3 cm) to concentrate purely on stitch direction, colour blending, and control.

The structure of the course is as follows:

Part One focuses on tapestry shading.
Part Two explores angled shading.
Part Three covers natural shading.

Each session builds on the previous one, giving students time to practise and reflect. Some independent work between classes is encouraged to help consolidate learning.

This course is particularly suited to students with basic embroidery experience who want to improve their technical confidence. It is also ideal for those who have previously struggled with silk shading and would benefit from returning to the fundamentals in a focused, supportive setting.
Students will need to bring:
-Calico or another plain cotton
-3 x stranded cotton in a family of shades
-Size 12 embroidery needles
