IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SUMMER SCHOOL BOOKINGS:
Immerse yourself in the timeless art of embroidery with this exclusive 5-day beginner workshop offered by the Royal School of Needlework Fellow Emma Broughton.
This class is inspired by the historic "Design worked by Mary Queen of Scots and her Ladies" from the RSN collection’s first 100, which you can view here. This piece was also designed with the RSN’s old motto ‘Small Birds May Fly High’ in mind to create a stunning example of historical Jacobean style embroidery. This piece exemplifies the rich tradition and intricate techniques that have been cherished and preserved by the RSN over the years. You’ll have the unique opportunity connect with the historical artistry that continues to inspire contemporary embroidery and to recreate elements of this iconic design while learning essential embroidery techniques. The colour palette for this project has been chosen to represent Mary Queen of Scots, featuring Heraldic Gold, Flame Red, and Grass Green to evoke the richness of her story and legacy.
During the 5-day workshop, you will learn and practice a range of foundational embroidery stitches, including:
- Outline and Detail Stitches: Stem stitch, Raised Stem Band, Long Arm Feather Stitch, and Long Arm Chain
- Filling Stitches: Long and Short Stitch, Fishbone Stitch, Laid Work, and Trellis (including Battlement Couching)
- Decorative Stitches: Buttonhole, Heavy Chain Stitch, Chain Stitch, Fly Stitch, French Knots, Pistol Stitch, and Woven Wheel.
