The prancing lion and unicorn are synonymous with majesty and royalty. They have appeared on the royal seal for many years which the Royal School Of Needlework gained in 1875 in recognition of the exquisite craftsmanship of its embroiderers. This design celebrates the close ties between embroidery and royalty and the huge part that needlework has had to play in creating items of splendour and the tools used to achieve it.
This 5 day course will focus upon padded silk shading and the stitches and techniques required in its creation.
The students will learn how to build up layers of felt padding to create a sculptured base for the split stitch, satin stitch and long and short stitch to be worked on top to create a beautifully shaded lion and unicorn. The students will also learn a range of decorative stitches and techniques such as trailing, split stitch, satin stitch and French knots to embroider a crown within a mini ring frame. A selection of real embroidery tools such as gold coloured scissors, pearl glass headed pins, a wooden bobbin and large needle will then be applied and used to embellish the design.
The class kit will include all of the fabrics, threads, needles and other materials required to complete the project including all of the embroidery tools applied to the design.
This class is suitable for mixed abilities; intermediate to advanced but some experience with silk shading would be preferable.
