This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2025
The Royal School of Needlework is honoured to have Her Majesty The Queen as our Patron and were delighted to design and create Her Majesty’s Robe of Estate. The RSN’s Embroidery Studio team of professional embroiderers produced some of their best work in the design and creation of this piece in modern Goldwork techniques and Her Majesty loved the final work.
The Queen’s Robe of Estate was designed to represent Their Majesties love of nature and the environment. There are a total of 24 plants featured on the robe, all chosen for their personal associations to Their Majesties, with wild flowers at the base of the robe, leading up to the four emblematic flowers of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Flowers include Delphinium, one of The King’s favourite flowers and the birth flower of July, the birth month of The Queen.
So we were particularly thrilled when Her Majesty agreed to the RSN Embroidery Studio producing a special ‘sampler’ featuring the flowers and insects from her robe and for the the RSN Embroidery Studio to produce individual kits featuring six of the flowers.
For our 2025 Summer School we are delighted to be able to offer one of these kits, the Delphinium, as a 3 day in person class at Hampton Court Palace. You will be guided by RSN tutor and Senior Professional Studio Embroiderer Helen Stevens who worked on the Robe of Estate and also stitched the sample for the kit.
The piece is best worked on a slate frame, either 18 or 24" size. If you are able to frame up your slate frame with medium weight calico before arriving at Hampton Court, that will be helpful. Set your split pins and side lacing so that the fabric is slack in the frame so that you can apply the velvet with design during the first session. We will ensure that a hoop is available for sampling.
The kit includes all the materials you will need to complete the kit. Scissors, velvet boards, mellors and tweezers will be available to borrow but we would advise binging your own if you have them.
This class is recommended for intermediate stitchers and above, some experience of Goldwork is helpful but not essential.
