£636.00
This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2025
Immerse yourself in the timeless art of embroidery with this exclusive 10 session Intermediate to Advanced Goldwork and Surface Stitches workshop offered by Royal School of Needlework Fellow Emma Broughton.
This class is inspired by the historic Tudor Rose Design from a painted Tudor portrait as well as the many other versions visible around the RSN’s home at Hampton Court Palace. The design also draws influence blending regal symbolism with exquisite craftsmanship with elements from the late 19th-century Blackwork cushion cover designed by the Royal School of Art Needlework (now called the Royal School of Needlework). This includes Elizabethan or Jacobean style with coiling stems (rinceaux), flowers, fruit, insects, and birds and is part of the RSN Collection & Archive’s first 100, which you can view here. This stunning interpretation of historical embroidery is worked in Goldwork techniques using silver and black metal threads, alongside surface stitches that create a rich and textured effect.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to connect with the artistry of the Tudor period while learning essential and advanced embroidery techniques. The design reflects the grandeur of the era and celebrates the iconic Tudor Rose, symbolizing unity and heritage. By the end of the 10 sessions, you’ll have recreated elements of this remarkable design, gaining skills in Goldwork and surface stitching that will inspire your future embroidery projects.
During the 10 x 2.5 hour sessions, you will learn and practice a range of foundational embroidery stitches, including:
- Surface Stitches: Buttonhole, Satin (padded), Fishbone, Seeding, running and Stem stitch.
- Goldwork Stitches: Burden stitch over Jap, Chipping, Couching, Cutwork (flat and over string), Padded Leather (Faux), Pearl purl (traditional and over-stretched)
- Padding techniques: Felt and String padding.
These stitches will allow you to explore foundation techniques and stitches while bringing the inspired design to life.
You will work on Silk Dupion or a cotton Jacquard fabric (to be confirmed) and stitch with high-quality Silver plated and black metal threads as well as DMC threads.
