Please note this is an RSN Experience class which will run from 10am-4pm at the Holburne Museum, Bath
Join us at the Holburne Museum on 9 May to create a fabulous floral beadwork design inspired by a rare seventeenth century Bead Basket made in England. You will also be treated to a viewing of the basket depicting Charles II next to a castle within a leafy landscape.
During the class, RSN Tutor, Deborah Wilding will show you how to create a beaded stitched background similar to the basket work of the original and then move on to create individual wired elements matched to the flowers and animals which decorate the basket.
Your kit will include the background fabric, beads, threads, needles, padding string, wires and a full instruction booklet so you can complete any elements you did not complete in class.
Like silk embroidery, beadwork was a fashionable pastime for amateur girls and women in wealthy households. They were taught the art in much the same way that they were taught other forms of needlework and embroidery.
However, whereas most silk embroideries are now much faded, here the glass beads retain their astonishingly vibrant colours. The composition is made from thousands of beads of varying sizes and colours that have been skilfully threaded onto fine wires and attached to the mesh-like basket frame. The use of lampworked glass heads and hands on the royal figures is exceptionally rare and important.
The figures are almost certainly intended to represent Charles II, who had recently been restored to the throne, and Catherine of Braganza. The figures are surrounded by many charming colourful beaded appliqués of flowers, birds, insects and animals. The composition is made from thousands of brightly coloured glass beads of varying sizes that have been skilfully threaded onto fine wires and attached to the mesh-like basket frame.
This event includes entrance to the museum which you will be able to visit at lunchtime and after the class until the museum closes at 5pm. You may view many of the museum's magnificent objects including exquisite embroideries and Georgian portraits.
Joining Instructions:
Registration commences at 9.45am. The class will be held in the Museum’s Clore Learning space, situated on the ground floor. This space can be accessed from 9.45am via large white door, on the right hand side of the building.
