Discover a creative approach to metal thread embroidery in this contemporary workshop led by embroidery artist Hanny Newton. With her thoughtful guidance, you’ll explore how a fresh perspective can open up new possibilities within this centuries-old art form. By reimagining traditional techniques, Hanny invites you to expand your stitch practice, experiment with materials, and develop your own distinctive creative voice.
Designed for embroiderers of all experience levels -from curious beginners to seasoned stitchers - this workshop offers a welcoming space to experiment, play, and question stitch. Together, you’ll delve into the much-loved goldwork techniques of couching with metal threads and chipping with metal purls, learning not only how to execute them with confidence, but also how to push them beyond tradition. Through guided exercises, drawing and personal exploration, you’ll discover the magic of metal threads and their contemporary potential.
Over the two days, you’ll create a unique series of hand-embroidered samples alongside exploratory drawings, forming your own toolkit of techniques and ideas.
Guest Tutor – Hanny Newton
Embroidery Artist Hanny Newton is known for her contemporary approach to goldwork and embroidery straw embroidery. Since studying at the Royal School of Needlework (2011-13) and Falmouth University (2014) she has been fascinated by the inherent qualities of metal threads, and has a deep belief in the importance of innovation and self-expression to keeping crafts alive. From her studio in Shropshire, she works internationally with interior designers and art consultancies, applying her creative approach to historical techniques to large scale projects for hotels and private residences around the world. She teaches her contemporary approach to goldwork at internationally, including the British Museum, West Dean College and the Australian Design Centre, Sydney. She is the winner of the prestigious QEST Sanderson Rising Star Craft Award 2024.
