After what has been a very busy year, keep up to date with the RSN Embroidery Studio and see what they have been up to in recent months.

Decorex International 2023

In October the RSN Embroidery Studio team were once again in attendance at Decorex International, held at London Olympia.

This was the team’s fifth outing to the show, and it was lovely to meet so many different designers and artists from a wide range of creative industries, including Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen.

Our theme for the stand this year was inspired by the work the RSN Embroidery Studio had recently undertaken for Their Majesties Coronation.  A particular highlight for visitors to the show was being able to see up close our part-worked coronation sampler inspired by Her Majesty Queen Camilla’s Robe of Estate. The piece encapsulates all the flowers featured on Her Majesty’s robe and will be a valuable contribution to our archive and teaching resource for future generations here at the RSN.

In addition, there was a very special collaborative piece on display that was worked on in partnership with Nick Gutfreund, whom the RSN Embroidery Studio team had worked with earlier this year on the Anointing Screen for the Coronation. Designed and worked especially for the show, the embroidered canvas chair back was inspired by a piece from our design archive and was set onto a bespoke chair frame created by Nick. The top of the chair represented a roll of fabric and was the perfect match to the embroidery.

Drapers Hall event

At the end of October, the RSN Studio team were thrilled to host a special event in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Drapers in their livery hall in London.

The day began with a bespoke embroidery class led by RSN Tutor Sarah de Rousset-Hall. The students worked on a design of a dove created especially for the event, inspired by the symbolic motif on the Anointing Screen which the RSN Studio had produced earlier this year.

Later in the day, livery members from 88 different livery companies attended a presentation showcasing the various processes that went into producing this monumental piece. Guest speakers included Aidan Hart, who designed the screen; Pete Tarrant from Digitex, who machine-embroidered the main tree; Nick Gutfreund, the project lead and creator of the wooden framework; Tim Royall, who created the gold eagles which sat atop the screen; and David Roper from the Grenadier Guards, who coordinated the deployment of the screen. Our Head of Studio, Anne Butcher, and Studio Manager, Gemma Murray, represented the RSN Embroidery Studio team.

Following the presentation, Anne and Gemma, along with Masako Newton and Sarah, were able to meet with the members of each company and talk through their experience of working on the screen.

It was a wonderful event and a great opportunity to share some behind the scenes facts and figures.

Visit the RSN Embroidery Studio’s website to find out more about their work, from restoration and conservations to new bespoke commissions to be admired by generations to come.

Thinking of taking up a new hobby in 2024? Why not start the New Year by learning something beautiful and join our Certificate & Diploma course!

If you are going back to work in January and looking for a flexible new hobby that you can fit around your busy schedule, our Certificate & Diploma Course in Technical Hand Embroidery is the one for you.

The RSN Certificate & Diploma course is an excellent and flexible way to elevate your hand embroidery skills and can be learned from wherever you are in the world.

Meet Magdalena, who shares her story of moving to the UK from Poland to take the Certificate Course.

I started practicing hand embroidery when I was 10 and I was inspired by my mum.

I learned a lot, but as an adult I was looking for more techniques to expand my knowledge, and then I discovered the Royal School of Needlework on the internet. I decided to join a Day Class and travelled all the way from Poland to the UK just to attend this class.

Everything was mysterious: the palace itself, the school, the hidden staircase, the interior, the equipment (in Poland the sitting frame is not widely used).I fell in love with the place and was so desperate to learn more that I decided to move from Poland to London to live and attend classes at the RSN.

While living in London, I immediately decided to take the Certificate course, which I have now completed. During the course, I learned a lot of new stitches and techniques we don’t know and don’t use in Poland. In the meantime, I have since started teaching hand embroidery at the Royal Wilanów Palace in Warsaw.

I love all the techniques that I have learnt on the Certificate course, and I inspire my students with the love I have learned at the Royal School of Needlework.”

The RSN Degree BA (Hons) Degree Programme provides a great way into many industries. From Fashion, to teaching to textiles, there is a wealth of opportunity available to anyone who is considering joining the course.

Meet Livia Papiernik, the newest addition to the RSN Degree team. Livia’s teaching journey began at the very same place, as a student!

“I’ve known I wanted a career in textiles since my GCSE’s, and the art room became my sanctuary throughout school. Arriving at the RSN surrounded by other textile and embroidery lovers, was such an inspiring place to be!

Throughout my degree, I was searching for what my artistic language was, what it was I wanted to say through my art and where I wanted to go. This constant search for who I was as an artist led me to think extremely experimentally and outside of the box with my stitches. I was always eager to push the boundaries of this traditional craft and find myself and my stories within them.

We are often in a rush to decide who we are as makers, putting pressure on ourselves to know the answer by the time we graduate. I’ve learnt that it is our journey that gives us those answers and that we should in fact constantly be searching, rethinking, requestioning what and why we are making.

Returning to the RSN as a lecturer feels like a beautiful full circle. I’m excited to help future makers discover what embroidery can be and how they can find their unique and individual language through stitch. I love the RSN’s value of ensuring the future of these century old traditional techniques and how much the degree pushes for them to be challenged and crafted for a contemporary world. It has always been my aim to showcase the extraordinary qualities of stitch, and what better way to do that than mentoring more makers to have their voices heard within the embroidery world.’

From 30 October – 3 November, it is International Stress Awareness Week, a week that aims to support people and organisations to better cope with stress and improve mental wellbeing.

It has been long documented that there is a positive link between hand embroidery, and improved mental health. By stepping away from fast paced, busy modern life that involves endless screentime, craft based hobbies can be a great way to switch off from stresses and responsibilities, as well as provide an opportunity to create something lovely.

To celebrate the importance of hand embroidery and its effect on the mind, we would like to share with you some quotes from our students and supporters, who have found the art of hand embroidery deeply beneficial for improving their mental health, and keeping stress at bay.

“Embroidery helps me become present in moment and gives me a sense of achievement”.

“Embroidery puts a large distance between my negative thoughts”.

“Stitching has been part of my stress relief toolkit for years!”

“I suffer from severe anxiety, and stitching helps me stop the endless cycle of thinking about worse case scenarios”.

“It enables me to focus entirely on creating something beautiful”.

“It keeps my mind off screens after a long work day”.

We would also like to share this testimonial from a loyal supporter of the RSN, who has found comfort in embroidery whilst going through a difficult time.

My husband was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a 100% fatal motor neuron disease, just before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time when we most needed support, we both became very isolated from friends, family and other connections. Taking classes virtually through the RSN these last few years has been so positive for my mental health and has helped give me confidence that comes through learning and creation.

All the classes I have taken have been really wonderful. Thank you for offering virtual classes. They’ve helped calm me, and given me a community around a shared interest, when I’ve really needed it.’

If you are looking for a creative outlet that can help you unwind and deal with your stress levels, why not give hand embroidery a try? We have plenty of classes, courses and resources that can help.

If you would like to make a start, and get your friends and family involved, join our Online Sip & Stitch event on Friday 3 November, where you will stitch alongside people from all over the world to help raise funds for the RSN.

Visit RSN Stitch Bank, a wonderful free resource that aims to digitally conserve and showcase the wide variety of the world’s embroidery stitches.

Are you thinking of joining our Certificate & Diploma Course? The RSN Certificate & Diploma Technical Hand Embroidery Course is an excellent and flexible way to elevate your hand embroidery skills and can be learnt from wherever you are in the world.

Meet Kenix Lai, who shares with us her Online Certificate learning experience from Hong Kong.

“I am Kenix, an embroidery enthusiast from Hong Kong. I have loved doing most kinds of crafts since I was a kid. I started practicing hand embroidery from a random hobby class in 2015, and then fully began my hand embroidery journey. Over the years, I joined different classes, read a lot of books, and watched YouTube videos to learn hand embroidery skills.

My RSN journey officially started in summer 2021, with the first RSN International Summer School, my only thanks to COVID! I wanted to develop my hand embroidery techniques in the most formal, traditional way. That’s why I chose the RSN.

After the International Summer School, I found out about the RSN C&D Course on a Virtual Open Day and decided to start in early 2022. I wanted to gain recognition from an international organisation for hand embroidery. The RSN C&D Online Course perfectly answers all my needs without physical boundaries.

The RSN C&D experience is amazing and incredible. The set schedule allows continuous and progressive learning in hand embroidery and provides enough time for working on my own piece between lessons. The interactions with the Tutor and classmates have broadened my perspective and deepened my knowledge of embroidery. Because of the programme, I have made new RSN friends who share the same interest in the virtual classrooms and on social networks.

I am glad to have buddies when I’m trying something new. I keep posting on social media and sharing about my joyful RSN life and how the RSN adds an elegant and classic attitude to my busy modern life.

When you are in class with people who share the same passion, all anxiety, frustration, and uncertainty will gradually fade. The course is deemed to be challenging, yet manageable. The Tutor and classmates are super friendly, supportive, and always willing to help. I would recommend trying the RSN International Summer School or taking a Day & Evening class first to feel the RSN momentum, and then look at joining the RSN C&D Course.”

I am looking forward to the Appliqué technique on the Diploma Course, a very different technique with fabric. I have made a promise to myself that I will fly over to the UK to visit Hampton Court Palace as part of my RSN studies. Hope to see you there soon!”

The Royal School of Needlework has many beautiful samplers in its collection. One such sampler is a tiny piece, worked on linen with deep purple silk threads. It is small, the size of a modern-day letter envelope. On it is stitched, ‘ACKWORTH SCHOOL 1783 B. RICKMAN’. It is typical of late 18th-century Quaker samplers but tells a completely unique story.

This sampler, worked by Benjamina Rickman at Ackworth School in 1783, is the earliest known sampler of this style from the school. The sampler is embellished with medallions, the name given to the octagonally and half-octagonally framed geometric, floral, and faunal motifs that so frequently adorn Quaker samplers. Benjamina’s sampler includes five half octagons, as well as motifs like crowns, birds, and a variety of letters.

Benjamina Rickman was a Quaker girl from Westminster, London, who attended Ackworth School from 1780 to 1785. Her extract sampler, which is a very plain sampler featuring a moralising text, her name, and the year in which she stitched her sampler, is in the collection of Ackworth School. Ackworth School was founded in 1779 in Pontefract, West Yorkshire for the children of poorer Quakers. Girls at the school were taught to make marking, darning, extract, and medallion samplers.

This medallion sampler style is commonly thought to have originated at Ackworth School but was actually occasionally practiced by Quakers in Ireland, England, and colonial America throughout the 18th century before being adopted and popularised by Ackworth. It was taught at a variety of Quaker schools on both sides of the Atlantic from the late 18th century through the first decades of the 19th century.

Benjamina Rickman’s sampler is by far the earliest Ackworth medallion sampler, produced five years earlier than the next earliest example. As of 2006, the earliest known Ackworth medallion samplers were produced in 1790. A 1788 example made by Ann Coates was sold at auction several years ago. Benjamina’s very early example rewrites our previously held beliefs about the spread of this particularly Quaker sampler style and inspires questions about who brought the style to Ackworth and when. This treasure from the RSN collection is an incredibly important piece of sampler history.
