Join Sarah de Rousset-Hall for this RSN Exclusive class exploring the Whitework stitches of the RSN Stitch bank. The class is a term long deep-dive into Pulled and Drawn Whitework techniques, working on a sampler.

We will start with an exploration of pulled work stitches, looking at the variety of textures and effects that can be created by manipulating the weave of our linen ground fabric, including pulled work eyelets.

Next we will explore some of the most common surface stitches used in Whitework including Couching, Trailing, Ladder Stitch, Satin Stitch (and it’s variations), French Knots, Chain Stitch (and variations), Stem Stitch and using Counted stitches to create fillings.

There will also be a small motif to complete to combine the techniques learnt so far.

Finally we will move on to withdrawn work, carefully removing threads from our fabric before using hem stitches and filling stitches to manipulate the remaining threads into new shapes and textures. We will also cover corner fillings and cutwork eyelets.

The kit box does not include written instructions, but students will be able to use the RSN Stitch bank as a reference. Any stitches not covered in the Stitch bank will have written instructions and diagrams and/or videos provided by the tutor as the course progresses.

In your kit box will be:
Cashel count Linen sized for an 18” roller or slate frame
Additional linen square for sampling
2x Perle Cotton balls (1x white, 1x purple)
2x White Stranded Cotton skeins, 2 x purple Stranded Cotton skeins
2x Cotton a Broder Skeins (1 white, 1 purple)
1x Gutermann Sew all thread reel
A water soluble pen
All the needles you will require

Class Schedule:
Week 1-4: Pulled Work
Week 5-8: Surface Stitches
Week 9-12: Drawn Work

This is a mixed ability class, so suitable for all stitchers, but experience of counted embroidery would be helpful. White on white stitching can be challenging for the eyes, so the kit includes purple coloured threads as well as white for those who may have difficulty.

In addition to the class kit you will need: good quality embroidery scissors, an 18” roller hoop or slate frame (and associated framing materials) and an 8” embroidery hoop.

Before class you will need to frame up your large piece of linen into an 18” roller frame or slate frame. The design will be tacked and drawn on as homework between classes one and two.The smaller piece is sized for sampling in an 8” hoop.
